First Impressions: Runecairn Wardensaga
Nov. 29th, 2025 12:07 amFirst Impressions:
Runecairn Wardensaga
What is it?
A norse-themed rules lite RPG, designed for group play but containing solo rules.
This is an extremely well-designed product, containing a lot of guidance on what flavour of game you can expect, what kinds of adventures you may have, what the warden’s (GM’s) job is, what the player should bring to the table (eg ‘treat NPCs as real people’)
Is it playable out of the box?
Hard to say without trying, but I like how much conceptual guidance the game provides, and I will read it from that point of view because a lot of this will apply to other games, too.
Amendments:
Solo rules, bring your own oracles. (The solo rules include oracles, but you’re encouraged to use whatever works for you; Tarot is mentioned, but no specific rules are provided.)
Tools
As far as I can make out, 3d6, d8/d10/d20
Price:
£10 (ca. $15), free demo available.
Verdict
🧊 I don’t have spoons for this right now; but it looks like it’s worth engaging with. Added to my collection of solo games.
🎓 Definitely need to study this; not because it's too complex, but because I have no brain.
Right now, I don’t have the brains to learn a whole new system and figure out how to solo it.
I have a lot of things to deal with right now, and just haven’t got the ability to concentrate on a new thing for hours when I have plenty of other books and systems vying for my attention. Just logging my Black Friday loot and all the things that came before is taking up all available processing space.
I’m definitely keeping this one around to read when I find the leisure.
Ironically, I haven’t skimmed enough to get a true taste of the setting, just the conceptual framework, From what I gather (I did poke at reviews a little), the game has a number of interesting mechanics around classes, levelling up, and death.
Unfortunately for Runecairn, one of the games on my desk that I am trying to make a priority and invest some time in is Vaesen, which is also a Norse Mythology inspired game (different time period, completely different mechanic) so, yeah: this one is in a queue through no fault of its own.
